Inequality & Mass Transit in the Bay Area

A recent feature in The New Yorker juxtaposed New York City’s subway stops with their residents’ incomes. Like NYC, San Francisco has people of both extreme poverty and wealth, often living toe-to-toe. We wondered how those graphs would look in our neck of the woods. The results show the Bay Area’s economic inequality and its relationship with transit and urban form.

U.S. exceptionalism and billionaires

Ryan McCarthy linked to a post by Ruchir Sharma running on Ezra Klein’s blog analyzing global billionaires.
It has an accompanying chart, which fails our self-sufficiency test. That test involves erasing raw data from a chart, and figuring out how much information the graphical elements themselves convey.

 A map of U.S. wealth distribution - in 1870

Wealth distribution (or maldistribution) is a popular topic these days.   This map shows how different this country was in the post-Civil War era.  Note the density of what would later become the “rust belt,” and the paleness of Florida and Texas.
